As I am sure I have emphasized enough by now, Melbourne is a very artsy city. It's their way of attempting to be more culturally relevant than Sydney. I personally love it because there is street art everywhere! And it really is art, not just gang graffiti scribbled on buildings (although there is some of that too). There is a good chance that any random side street or alleyway you wander down will have some form of graffiti. Then there's streets like Hosier Lane (pictured on right) which is wall-to-wall paintings.
They are always changing too. This picture is from July 2010 from Streets of Melbourne, and below is a picture I took in February of the same wall.
I hope to find more cool street art as I stay here, which means I need to start wandering to some new areas of Melb. So, the goals while being here so far are: 1) Get hipster wardrobe makeover, 2) Once hipsterness has been achieved, start going to every cool coffee shop and become coffee connoisseur, 3) After getting really amped up on indie caffeine, take lots of photos of graffiti.
In the mean time, check out these blogs about Melbourne street art and exhibitions!
